After the Brixton
riots, the relationship between the police and the (especially black) minorities,
were becoming worse. The majority of the police force is white, and they
have traditionally regarded black people as more likely to commit crimes.
Young black people are five times as likely to be arrested than their white
fellows. Police regularly stopped black people simply on suspicion.
So the police is often regarded as racially prejudiced. This has
also been shown by the case of Stephen Lawrence

The Metropolitan Police says that they can’t work against problems like
racism etc. by themselves.
They want to:

Work with the community

Listen to the community

Get more black policemen

Have more black policemen in higher ranks
The Metropolitan Police announced a strategy to ensure that a case like
Stephen Lawrence will never happen again.
Here are some of the main points that are included in the package "Protect
and Respect":

Random testing will check whether officers behave in a courteous and correct
fashion regardless of the colour of a compliant or witness.

Every member of staff has to take responsibility in this matter, and if
necessary, supervisors will take disciplinary action.

Police forces which fail to tackle racism face the threat of government
inspectors who will be sent in to run their community relations policies

The use of such powers as "stop and search" will be monitored.

A group, of which 80% of the members are from ethnic minorities, has been
set up to assist with developing the way, the Metropolitan Police deals
with racist crime.
The aim of this new strategy is, to provide better protection from racial
and violent crime and to demonstrate fairness in every aspect of policing!
